Sedation Dentistry
For many patients, seeing the dentist can be a large source of anxiety. We understand that this is a common phobia, and will work with you to help mitigate these fears. One of the ways we do this is through sedation dentistry.
What is sedation dentistry?
There are several sedation services that fall under the category of sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry ranges from nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) to help you relax during your appointment, to full-on anesthesia which will put you to sleep.
Mild Sedation
For mild sedation, we will administer nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask that is placed over your nose. This sedation method allows you to relax, and feel a noticeable reduction in stress. Mild sedation, aka laughing gas, is a great treatment option for patients that are anxious or afraid of their dental appointments. If coming to the dentist makes you anxious, this sedation option can help you to relax and will have you feeling light and comfortable during your exam.
Oral sedation
While gas sedation is usually effective, it may not be effective enough for some patients. Oral sedatives can put you into a deeper and more relaxed state. Before your procedure, you’ll be given a pill to swallow. When the medication kicks in, you’ll feel drowsy and relaxed throughout your entire appointment. As a safety precaution, it is important that you do not drive home from your appointment after oral sedation, so make sure to have other arrangements prepared ahead of time.
IV Sedation
When gas and oral sedation just aren’t enough, we use an IV sedative. IV sedatives are used when the patient suffers from extreme anxiety or if they are undergoing a complicated procedure. IV sedation will keep the medication flowing as needed, and help to block out any pain, discomfort, or anxiety.
